Spalding - The Beast
Spalding "The Beast" Portable Basketball Hoop - 60" Glass Backboard
For a true basketball player, the only way to go is a tempered glass backboard. No other backboard offers the true bank you get on a real basketball court.

The adjustable height on the Beast is also a plus for younger player's development.

I paid for assembly and suggest buyers do the same. Just watching two big guys who assemble these courts all the time struggle with the size, weight and time to put it together made me realize that this is not a job for everyone.

I'm very happy with this purchase and recommend it highly.

The Best

This system is really the best residential portable out there BY MILES. It really is top notch quality and looks great. It is as solid as a tank. At the store, I thought it might actually look like a huge tank in my yard, but when I got it home - it was fine. It does resemble a crane but I have received complements on the look and quality.

Seriously - go to the store and bounce a ball off the backboards of the lower cost portal goals at they will jiggle around and vibrate. This thing does not.

Also, I weight 220 pounds and can hang on the rim without pulling the thing over - try that with any other portable system. It's going to take a tornado to topple this thing in a wind storm - if even possible.

If you take care of this thing - it will last 10 years. I justified the extra cost by thinking how much would a nice goal(compared to the $350 ones) cost over the next 10 years - and this came out the winner.

With this, and any outside steel structures, you should check for bare spots or rust spots in the metal and cover with "flat" black rustolium - takes 2 minutes. If you do that once or twice a summer, then this thing will last 15+ years.

"The Beast" is THE BEST portable out there!

Did a lot of research before buying and finally decided to pay the money for "The Beast" for my 13 yr old son. I'm very glad I took my time deciding and got the best portable system available. Having a 60" glass backboard almost makes this feel like you're playing in a real gym! Unit does wobble a bit when you shoot up a brick but not any more than the residential in-ground units do. The handle makes the unit easy to move anywhere you want it. It uses a four wheel system that can be steered like a wagon. No more struggling trying to tip the unit over and roll on two wheels. Rim height adjustment is easy and accurate. I really like the overhang that the backboard has from the base so you can "play in the paint" without running into the base. Ordered from Amazon and received the unit in 9 days. Delivery guys delivered to my door, not just curbside. I don't know why some other reviewers had trouble with the assembly instructions. They are clear and concise and easy to follow. One thing that I would advise anybody who gets this is to check all the parts before starting assembly. I had two sets of rear struts in the box and no set of front struts. They look the same except the fronts have more holes to bolt stuff to. I called Spalding and they answered right away. I told them the problem and they sent the front struts via Fedex and I had them a week later. Disappointing to have to wait another week to put it together but not that big of a deal. My 13 yr old son and I assembled the unit completely in about 3 hrs. It's really basic to assemble as long as you follow the instructions and have a nice set of sockets. No hang-ups at all. I was wavering between buying "The Beast" or a lower priced Spalding unit with 54" glass backboard but I think it was worth the extra $ to have "The Beast". The unit plays very well and looks and feels like my son will have years of fun using it.

Worth the preventable major pain it is to put together,

I knew from reading other reviews that this is a top of the line product (Electronic Muscle Stimulator | Electric Muscle Stimulator) .Now that I put it together I can tell you I got more help from the prior reviewers who I refered to during the fustrating assembly process. You would think the manufacturer would read these and try to improve on the process by redoing the instruction manual. I had the same problem as others getting the to main posts together using oil and laying one end against a tree and pounding a wood block on the top with sledge hammer The way they instruct is useless I also experienced what another reviewer did and that was to sheer or on of the bolts that hold the main pole to the base. You really need to tighten down those already on the base Get them all tight before you try to tighten the base bolts down It tells you in the beginning to tighten them but I think it should be a more important call ou to you and a CAUTION on the page where you put the post to the base Could a saved a trip to Home Depot for new bolt with a little more instruction in the manual
We ran out of patience on the height adjustment which we didnt know we had to slide the the hole inside the tube . Called several times and waited 20 minutes twice to get thru
Great product we are happy we bought it maybe thats why the company doesnt care to improve the inx .Looking back after doing it once I could put it together easily again but that tells you the instructions are poor and you have to learn from experiece or from other reviewers as the manual falls terribly short as far as I am concerned

Best portable system on themarket

I did an exhaustive search (internet, phone and in-person) to find a solid basketball system for my children. I wanted to get an in-ground system with a tempered glass backboard because my sons had destroyed two previous portable systems with the acrylic backboards. Underground utilities affected where a permanent system could be placed on my property so I had to look at portable systems again. To the best of my knowledge Spalding makes the only portable system with a tempered glass backboards. Amazon had the best price for "The Beast" which was under $1000, shipping included, so I made the purchase. This is a great product if you are looking for a sturdy and durable portable system. It took two of us about 5-6 hours to get the system ready to fill the base with water. It definitely takes two people but not through the entire process. Many steps can be done by one person, but when it's time to attach the backboard you definitely need two people. The best part of this portable system is the "thunk" you get when the ball plays off the backboard rather than the "bwannnng" you get off an acrylic system. This system should last for years and my boys play hard (i.e. hanging on the rim). This product is well worth the money and effort. Good luck with your purchase.

The Beast is a solid high quality basketball hoop

After comparing various backboards in the store, the Beast stood out as solid and shook much less than other systems when the ball hit the backboard.

I was dreading the assembly after reading the other reviews, but I was able to do it myself in about 4 hours. I echo another commenter, you want deep sockets and a 10-12" socket extender. I missed the comment about using WD40 to join the two poles, that took some effort. The instructions were well-written and all of the nuts and bolts came in separate packages for each step of the installation and were very well-labeled.

The backboard easily lowers and raises from 7.5 to 10 feet and can be rolled around without much effort.

Good Product, monster to assemble

The product is 1st class, the two pole peices are a bear to assemble. I advise you sand the poles paint off were they slide together and also oil. It will make a great difference when you try and put them together.

Quality for the money

Did a lot of research and bought this hoop. Design is quality, glass is very thick and solid. Takes 3 people to put together. Came
well packed in 3 boxes. Only con, no way to get sand inside, would have taken hours so opted to use water in the base.

The Beast is the Best

I read all the other reviews before making the purchase. The other reviews highlighted two main concerns, first not all pieces included in package and second difficulty in putting the system together. One other guy was complaining about safty but I think that is because he dropped the glass backboard and it broke - not a surprise if you ask me. From my experience all the pieces were clearly labeled and packaged such that each major step had its own package of nuts, bolts, etc. Very easy to understand the instructions and find the appropriate pieces. As for the second concern, the system is not easy to put together but me and my seven year had a fun day working together to get just about all of it together. I needed my wife to help get the backboard attached. One key to remember that some of the other reviews (Best Electronic Dog Door Review ) mentioned, is when you are putting the metal beams together (that hold the backboard) use WD-40 or some other lubricant to help the pieces slide together. All in all - by far the best portable out there.

Should be nice but watch out

friend of ours had one, our boys play ball together. we did the final assembly the other night (the boys and I had done 80% of it a day earlier). as we got ready to put the water in the reservoirs he said "the reveiws are pretty good on this thing, but they're known to leak." guess what? the boys started filling with water and the thing leaked like a sieve. you pay this much money for something and it leaks right out of the box. am I goign to disassemble to get replacement? doubt it. terrible workmanship and quality. very unfortunate that you can't get quality you pay for out of Spalding or Amazon, but if you can't find another system I'd recommend taking the time to fill with water before you start assembly; you'll have to empty and refill for assembly (unless you're creative) but it may save headache.
